Specialty Coating & Laminating
Company Challenge
Berry Plastics, the original owner and operator of the Hanover manufacturing plant, had slated the facility for closure due to a need to consolidate resources. However, as one of the few plants in the world able to perform laminating and coating activities in the same location, the paper and paperboard products produced were still in demand.
Business First Solution
Specialty Coating & Laminating, Inc. (SC&L) was formed when local management acquired the facility and equipment from Berry Plastics. Thanks to outreach through the Business First Program, Hanover County Economic Development became aware of the imminent shutdown of the local facility and took action. SC&L’s management partnered with a local investment firm to secure financing and negotiate the purchase of the facility, land and equipment from Barry. A VCCS job-saving grant was identified, and Hanover County applied for the funds to assist SC&L in completing due diligence and forming a new company. Thirty-six jobs were saved and SC&L is now a profitable operation.
